The Future Energy Storage & System Integration Alliance (FESSIA) is a regional alliance born out of the need to ensure ASEAN’s energy systems remain stable and resilient, enabling large-scale integration of variable renewable energy (VRE) while safeguarding grid stability and energy security.
As ASEAN countries work towards meeting their net-zero ambitions over the coming decade, more variable renewable energy (VRE) such as solar and wind, will be integrated into their energy systems. When this happens, maintaining grid stability will become an increasingly critical challenge.

FESSIA is a multi-stakeholder coalition that unites the renewable energy industry, think tanks, and academia to address grid flexibility and energy security challenges in a high VRE future.
Through structured engagement using the “Route-to-Market” policy framework, we foster dialogue and shape policy that ensures a pathway for large-scale deployment of energy storage technology.
By equipping civil society organisations with expertise and networks to engage in grid issues, FESSIA helps lead the development of flexible, reliable, and net-zero grids across ASEAN.

We will focus on accelerating the deployment and integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across regional power grids from now till 2030.
Beyond 2030, our efforts will expand to advance long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies.
Headquartered in Singapore, we will begin in priority markets such as the Philippines and Vietnam, before scaling our work across Southeast Asia.

In the developed world, “nothing else will matter as much” to the speed of the energy transition as upgrading the power grid.

We must act now and invest in the backbone of a clean energy future: In modern, flexible and digital grids – including regional integration. In a massive scale-up of energy storage
António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, July 2025

FESSIA is the brainchild of Liming Qiao, recipient of the 2025 Climate Breakthrough Award and a pioneering strategist who has spent more than two decades driving bold change in climate and energy across Asia.
The 2025 Climate Breakthrough Award has empowered Liming to design and launch a bold new initiative—like FESSIA—for large-scale policy, economic, and social transformation to address the climate crisis. Read Liming’s story here.
Climate Breakthrough provides award recipients with US $4 million—the largest climate award for individuals—in multiyear, flexible, and non-directive funding.

FESSIA works with leading global and regional energy platforms including REN21, Global Solar Council (GSC), Utilities for Net Zero Alliance (UNEZA), Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES), Green Grids Initiative (GGI), Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA), and Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA), reinforcing our role as a trusted bridge between policy, industry, and system integration across Asia.
FESSIA is a new initiative, and we are looking for partners.
